New SIM, new number — and one big fear: losing years of WhatsApp chats, family groups and business conversations. The fear is unnecessary if you use WhatsApp’s built-in Change Number feature instead of simply registering a fresh account on the new number. Change Number moves your existing account — chats, groups, profile and settings included — from the old number to the new one.
This guide gives the exact steps for Android and iPhone, one critical backup warning that most guides bury, precisely what your contacts and groups will see, what happens to your old number afterwards, and the correct order of operations if you are changing your phone at the same time.
Before You Start: Four Requirements
WhatsApp’s own FAQ guidance, as reproduced in recent guides, sets these conditions:
- Your old number must be the one currently registered on your WhatsApp account. To check which number that is: open Settings, tap your profile picture at the top — your registered number is shown there. (That profile screen is for checking; the change itself starts from Account settings, below.)
- You must be able to receive SMS or calls on the NEW number — WhatsApp will verify it with a code, exactly like a fresh registration.
- The new number must be a supported type. WhatsApp cannot register VoIP numbers, toll-free numbers, paid premium numbers, Universal Access Numbers (UAN) or personal numbers. Landlines are accepted only on the WhatsApp Business app, not regular WhatsApp.
- Do it on your primary phone. Change Number does not work on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
One more preparation point from the same guidance: if you are changing the number on the same phone, insert the SIM card with the new number into the phone first, then start. And contrary to a claim in some older guides, you do not need to receive a code on the old SIM during this process — you must be logged in on your old account, and the verification code goes to the new number.
The Steps: Android and iPhone
Android:
- Insert the new SIM into your phone.
- Open WhatsApp and tap More options (three dots) > Settings > Account > Change number.
- Tap Next.
- Enter your old number in the first box and your new number in the second box — both in full international format (for Pakistan, +92 followed by the number without the leading 0).
- Tap Next.
- Choose whether to turn on Notify contacts, and pick an option (explained below).
- Tap Done.
- WhatsApp will now ask you to register your new number — complete the normal SMS/call verification.
iPhone: the identical flow, except you start from the Settings tab (bottom-right) > Account > Change number > Next, then the same two boxes, notify choice, Done, and registration of the new number.
Menu wording can vary slightly between app versions, but the Account > Change number path is the documented one on both platforms.
The Backup Trap: Read This Before You Tap Done
This is the warning that matters most in this whole guide. WhatsApp cloud backups are tied to the phone number they were made under. A backup taken under your old number cannot be restored after you change to the new number — backups can only be restored to the number they were created from.
Your chats survive the change itself when you stay on the same phone (see below) — the trap springs later, if the phone is lost, reset or replaced and you reach for that old backup. WhatsApp’s own recommendation is simple: after changing your number, take a fresh backup immediately so a valid, restorable backup exists under the new number. Five minutes in Settings > Chats > Chat backup is cheap insurance for years of conversations.
What Transfers — and What Does Not
WhatsApp’s official transfer list for a number change covers your account information: profile photo, name, About, individual chats, group chats, and settings — all of it moves from the old number to the new number. If you keep using the same phone, your chat history remains available on that phone; you do not lose your chats.
| Moves to your new number | Does NOT move / not documented |
|---|---|
| Profile photo, name and About | Cloud backups made under the old number (cannot be restored — take a fresh one) |
| Individual chats and group chats | Call history (not in WhatsApp’s official transfer list — do not count on it) |
| Your group memberships | WhatsApp Pay data — irrelevant in Pakistan, where WhatsApp Pay is not available |
| Settings | Channel ownership/admin transfer — WhatsApp does not document this; check your channel in the Updates tab after changing |
| Blocked contacts stay blocked | Messages people send to your old number after the change |
A few honest gaps: whether the channels you follow carry over is likewise undocumented by WhatsApp, linked devices are reported by most guides to carry over (if one asks, simply re-link it), and your two-step verification PIN is reported by guides to carry over too — note your PIN and recovery email before starting, just in case.
What Your Contacts and Groups Will See
When you tap Next, WhatsApp offers Notify contacts with three choices:
- All contacts
- Contacts I have chats with
- Custom… — hand-pick exactly who is told
Chosen contacts see a notice inside your existing chat with them, along the lines of “This contact changed their phone number. Tap to message or add the new number” — the conversation thread continues, just on the new number. Turn Notify contacts off and nobody is told individually.
Except your groups. Group chats are always notified of your number change, regardless of the Notify contacts setting — there is no silent option inside a group. You stay a member of every group; the group simply sees the change notice.
Two more effects to expect: after the change, WhatsApp deletes the account tied to your old number, so your contacts’ WhatsApp lists show your new number instead, and anything sent to the old number afterwards will not reach you. And contacts you have blocked stay blocked — and are not notified of your new number.
Changing Your Number AND Your Phone: The Order Matters
Doing both at once is where people lose everything. Follow WhatsApp’s documented order:
- On the old phone, run Change Number (steps above).
- On the old phone, take a backup under the new number (Android: to your Google Account).
- On the new phone: install WhatsApp, register the new number, and restore that backup.
Reversing the order — setting up the new phone first with the old backup — collides with the number-tied backup rule above.
WhatsApp Business accounts use the same Change Number feature and the same steps, and the business profile moves with the number. Afterwards, review everything customer-facing — and update the number everywhere it is printed: your website, visiting cards, shop sign and Google Business Profile. Business guides also advise screenshotting your catalog and quick replies before the change, as those details are only single-source claims for transfer.
Giving Up Your Old Number: The 45-Day and 120-Day Rules
Two different rules are constantly confused in headlines — keep them separate:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| 45 days — recycled numbers | If an account is unused for 45 days and is then activated on a different device, WhatsApp treats the number as recycled and removes the old account data tied to it, such as the profile photo and About |
| 120 days — inactivity | WhatsApp accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity (inactivity = not connecting to WhatsApp) |
And the reassurance behind both rules: a stranger who later receives your old number cannot read your chats. Conversations live on your device, protected by end-to-end encryption. The real risk of skipping Change Number is only confusion — people messaging the new owner thinking it is still you. Changing the number properly (or deleting the account) before surrendering a SIM removes even that.
WhatsApp Pay note: guides sometimes warn about payment data not transferring. For Pakistani readers this is a non-issue — WhatsApp Pay is not available in Pakistan, so there is no payment balance or history attached to your account to lose.
Can You Change Back? And How Often?
Guides disagree: some say a previous number cannot simply be re-associated, others say you can change back by running Change Number again. There is no official WhatsApp statement settling it, so treat “change back” as possible only while you still control the old number and can receive its verification code — once the old SIM is cancelled and the number recycled, it is effectively impossible. As for frequency: WhatsApp publishes no official limit on how often you can change numbers; guides only caution that very frequent changes might attract security checks. Do not believe any site quoting an exact waiting period — none is documented.
If the Verification Code for the New Number Does Not Arrive
Work through the standard fixes: re-enter the number in full international format (correct country code, no leading zero); test that the new SIM actually receives a normal SMS; wait for the in-app timer to finish instead of repeatedly tapping Resend — repeated requests trigger a longer cooldown, and sources quote wildly different cooldown lengths, so trust only the timer on your own screen; and use the Call me voice option when WhatsApp offers it. Never share your registration code with anyone who asks for it.
The steps, requirements and transfer list in this guide follow WhatsApp’s FAQ guidance on changing your phone number, as reproduced in October 2026 guides quoting the FAQ directly.

FAQs
Q: Will I lose my chats and groups if I change my WhatsApp number?
No — not if you use the official Change Number feature (Settings > Account > Change number) instead of registering a fresh account. WhatsApp’s own transfer list covers your profile photo, name, About, individual chats, group chats and settings, and on the same phone your chat history stays available. The one real danger is backups: a backup made under the old number cannot be restored after the change, so take a fresh backup under the new number as soon as the change completes.
Q: Can I change my number without telling anyone?
For individual chats, largely yes — leave Notify contacts off, or use the Custom option to tell only selected people. But there is one exception with no workaround: your group chats are always notified of the change, whatever you choose. Blocked contacts are never notified and remain blocked on the new number.
Q: I am changing my number and my phone together. What order should I do it in?
Change the number first, on the old phone. Then take a backup under the new number on that old phone. Only then set up the new phone: install WhatsApp, register the new number, and restore the backup you just made. Setting the new phone up first, or restoring an old-number backup, runs into WhatsApp’s rule that backups restore only to the number they were created from.
Q: Someone else will get my old SIM. Can they read my WhatsApp chats?
No. Your conversations are stored on your device and protected by end-to-end encryption; a recycled number does not hand anyone your chat history. WhatsApp additionally removes old profile data (photo and About) when a number unused for 45 days is activated on a different device, and accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity. Using Change Number before you give up the SIM is still the cleanest protection against people messaging the new owner by mistake.
