How to Create a WhatsApp Channel in Pakistan: Steps, Privacy Rules and Admin Guide

WhatsApp Channels are how news outlets, cricket pages, shops and creators in Pakistan now broadcast updates to thousands of people at once — without a group chat, and without showing anyone’s phone number. The good news: you do not need a famous page, a verified badge or a minimum number of followers to start one. A regular WhatsApp account is enough.

This guide covers who can create a channel in Pakistan, the exact steps on Android and iPhone, the privacy rules that protect both you and your followers, how channel admins work, the content rules that can get a channel closed, and how people will actually find and follow you.

What a WhatsApp Channel Actually Is

A channel is a one-way broadcast tool that lives in the Updates tab, next to Status — completely separate from your personal chats. Only the channel’s admins post updates: text, photos, videos, stickers and polls. Followers cannot reply to a channel. Their only ways to respond are emoji reactions and voting in polls, and even then, nobody can see how a specific person reacted — only the total count shows.

Think of it as a notice board, not a conversation. That is exactly why shops use channels for price lists and new stock announcements, teachers use them for class notices, and news pages use them for headlines — the message reaches everyone, and nobody has to mute an exploding group chat to escape it.

Two technical points worth knowing before you start. First, channel updates are stored on WhatsApp’s servers for up to 30 days, and admins can edit an update for up to 30 days after posting it. Second, channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default — WhatsApp said at launch that encryption for limited-audience channels was something it was exploring for the future, and admins were given options to block screenshots and forwards from their channel.

Who Can Create a Channel in Pakistan?

Channels reached Pakistan in September 2023, when WhatsApp expanded the feature to over 150 countries. Geo News and other Pakistani channels were live almost immediately. The rollout was gradual at first — in the beginning not every user could create their own channel even though following channels already worked — but WhatsApp’s stated plan was to let anyone create one, and that is the position now.

The requirements, as guides attributing them to WhatsApp state them:

  • An active WhatsApp account in either the regular app or the WhatsApp Business app — both work.
  • The latest version of WhatsApp. If the create option does not appear, update the app first.
  • No follower minimum, no approval process and no verified badge is required to start.

WhatsApp’s own age rule also applies: outside the European Region, which includes Pakistan, you must be at least 13 years old to use WhatsApp. One 2026 note for parents: newer parental-control reports say a parent may be able to control whether a teen account can create its own channels, but that rollout is gradual and may not have reached every Pakistani account yet.

Step-by-Step: Create Your Channel (Android and iPhone)

The flow is the same on both platforms:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the Updates tab.
  2. In the Channels section, tap the + icon.
  3. Select Create channel (older versions of the flow labelled this step New channel).
  4. Tap Continue or Get started and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Add a channel name — this is not permanent; you can change it later at any time.
  6. Optionally add a description and a profile picture (icon).
  7. Tap Create channel to finish.

For the icon, guides covering both Android and iPhone say you can take a photo on the spot, upload an image from your gallery, or use an emoji or sticker as the channel icon. For the description, write one or two honest lines about what followers will get — how often you post and what kind of updates. A word of caution: online guides disagree wildly about a supposed character limit for descriptions (figures from 500 to 2,048 appear), and no confirmed official limit could be verified, so simply keep it short and clear instead of trusting any number.

What about WhatsApp Web? Guides conflict here: some describe creating a channel from the Channels icon on WhatsApp Web, others state creation is mobile-only and Web is for managing an existing channel. The safe route: if you do not see a Create channel option on Web, create the channel on your phone first — you can post to it and manage it from Web afterwards.

Your Number Stays Hidden: Channel Privacy in Plain Words

Privacy is the channel feature’s biggest advantage over groups, and WhatsApp stated the rules plainly at launch:

  • As an admin, your phone number and profile photo are not shown to followers.
  • Following a channel does not reveal your phone number to the admin or to other followers. Followers are not visible to each other at all.
  • One nuance for channel owners: followers who are already in your contacts may be recognisable to you in the follower list (by name, and possibly photo, depending on their own privacy settings) — but their number is still not exposed by the channel itself.

There is one exception you must know about: people you invite to become admins receive that invitation as a regular chat message from your personal WhatsApp account — so invited admins can see your number. Only invite people you are comfortable sharing it with.

Adding Admins: Up to 16 at a Time

Running a channel alone gets tiring fast, and WhatsApp allows help. The channel owner can invite up to 16 admins at a time, choosing from their contacts or from the channel’s followers:

  1. Open the Updates tab and tap your channel.
  2. Tap your channel name to open the channel info page.
  3. Tap Invite admins at the top of the follower list (or tap a follower and choose Invite as channel admin).
  4. Pick from “Followers who are contacts” or “Contacts on WhatsApp”, add a message if you like, and send.

Rules worth knowing before you invite anyone:

  • An invite expires after 7 days if it is not accepted, and the owner can revoke it.
  • Once accepted, any admin can manage channel info and create, edit and delete any channel update.
  • Only the owner can delete the channel. Non-owner admins also cannot invite or dismiss other admins.
  • Any admin can dismiss themselves; a dismissed admin simply remains a follower.
  • WhatsApp advises all admins to switch on two-step verification — an admin’s hacked account is a door into your channel.

A beta note for completeness: WABetaInfo (an unofficial WhatsApp tracker) reported in August 2026 that optional admin profiles — a separate name and photo shown on your updates instead of your personal profile — were rolling out to some Android beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced it for everyone, so do not count on seeing it yet.

How Followers Will Find Your Channel

A new channel starts at zero, so use every discovery route WhatsApp gives you:

  • The directory. WhatsApp has a searchable channel directory in the Updates tab, automatically filtered by the user’s country, with New, Most Active and Most Popular lists. A shop in Lahore is surfaced to users in Pakistan first.
  • Your channel link. Open your channel, tap its name, and use Copy link. Share that link on Facebook, TikTok, your shop’s page, or printed on a banner.
  • Forwards. When someone forwards one of your updates into a chat or group, it carries a link back to your channel — good updates advertise themselves.

The Rules: What Gets a Channel Closed

WhatsApp’s Channel Guidelines, as summarised in channel guides, allow the company to close a channel or act against the account for: illegal content or activity; content that could cause serious harm, including credible threats, incitement to violence, encouragement of suicide or self-harm, and exploitation; fraud, deception, impersonation and scams; sharing intellectual property you do not have the right to use; and age-inappropriate content, including sexually explicit material and promotion of regulated goods or commercial sexual services. In plain words: post your own content, do not pretend to be someone else, and do not run scams — the same rules that keep any page alive.

Coming for Bigger Channels: Subscriptions and Promotion

In June 2025, Meta announced two ways channels can grow and earn — Channel subscriptions (followers pay a monthly fee for exclusive updates) and Promoted Channels (admins can pay to increase their channel’s visibility in the directory), alongside ads in Status. Meta said all three would roll out slowly over the following months and live only in the Updates tab, away from personal chats, and that your phone number would never be sold or shared with advertisers. Whether subscriptions or promotion have reached your specific Pakistani account is not guaranteed — check your channel’s info page; if the options are not there yet, your account simply has not received them.

The eligibility and privacy rules above follow WhatsApp’s own statements at the Channels launch, and the subscriptions and promotion features follow Meta’s June 2025 announcement for the Updates tab.

FAQs

Q: Can I create a WhatsApp Channel in Pakistan with a normal account, or do I need a Business account or followers first?
Either account works. Channels are live in Pakistan since the September 2023 expansion to over 150 countries, and guides attributing their requirements to WhatsApp state that an active account in the regular WhatsApp app or the WhatsApp Business app, updated to the latest version, is enough. No follower minimum, approval process or verified badge is required before you create one — your follower count starts at zero and grows through the directory, your shared channel link and forwarded updates.

Q: Will my personal phone number and photo be shown to my channel followers?
No. WhatsApp stated at launch that a channel admin’s phone number and profile photo are not shown to followers, and that following a channel does not reveal the follower’s number to the admin or to other followers — followers cannot even see each other. The one exception is admin invitations: an invite is sent as a normal chat message from your personal account, so anyone you invite as an admin can see your number. Invite only people you trust with it.

Q: How many admins can my shop’s channel have, and what can they do?
The owner can invite up to 16 admins at a time, from contacts or followers, and each invite expires after 7 days if unaccepted. Every admin can manage channel info and create, edit and delete any channel update. Only the owner can delete the channel itself, and non-owner admins cannot invite or dismiss other admins. A dismissed or departing admin simply stays on as a follower.

Q: Can I make money from my channel, or pay to grow it faster?
Meta announced both in June 2025: Channel subscriptions, where followers pay a monthly fee for exclusive updates, and Promoted Channels, which increase a channel’s visibility when people browse the directory. Both were described as rolling out slowly over the following months, so availability on a particular Pakistani account is not guaranteed, and Meta’s announcement stated no revenue-share percentage — treat any specific percentage quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed.
