Create Polls and Events in WhatsApp Groups: The Complete Guide

Two built-in tools turn a chaotic WhatsApp group into an organised one. Polls settle questions — the trip date, the menu, the meeting time — with a tap instead of forty “ok” messages. Events pin down who is actually coming, with a guest list and a reminder. Both are free, both are already in your app, and both gained important upgrades in 2025 and 2026 that older guides have not caught up with.

This guide covers creating polls and events step by step, the current limits, who can see votes, who can edit or cancel, and the features that are still beta-only despite what tutorial videos claim.

Creating a Poll (Android and iPhone)

  1. Open the chat or group.
  2. Tap Attach — the paperclip on Android, the + on iPhone.
  3. Tap Poll.
  4. Type your question under Question, then add your choices under Options.
  5. Tap Send.

The current limits: a poll needs a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 options; the question can be up to 255 characters and each option up to 100 characters. Before sending, you can reorder options by holding the drag handle next to an option and sliding it up or down — worth doing, because the first option quietly collects extra votes.

Polls are not just for groups: the same flow works in individual chats and in Community groups, and since January 2024 channel admins can post polls in Channels too (followers vote, but cannot create them).

Single Answer or Multiple Answers?

Under the options you will find a toggle labelled “Allow multiple answers” — and it is ON by default. With it on, each person can vote for several options. Turn it off when the poll must produce one winner — one date, one venue, one captain — and each voter gets exactly one vote. WhatsApp has offered single-vote polls since May 2023, and still describes regular polls as multiple-choice by default, so check the toggle every time; it is the most-skipped step in the whole feature.

Voting itself is forgiving: tap an option to vote, tap a different option to move your vote (in a single-answer poll the new tap automatically replaces the old one), and tap your chosen option again to remove your vote entirely.

Who Can See the Votes? (Read This Before a Sensitive Poll)

Results update live in the chat. Any participant can find the poll and tap “View votes” to see not just the totals but who voted for which option — no voting-first requirement, no admin-only view. The poll’s creator also gets a notification as votes arrive and can see how many people have voted in total, and polls can be found later through Chats → Search → Polls.

So the honest rule for years was: a group poll is not a secret ballot. Anyone who needs genuine anonymity — a class voting on something delicate, a workplace straw poll — should know every name is visible. That changed in 2026, with conditions:

August 2026 Changed the Poll Rules

An August 2026 WhatsApp update added three poll features:

  • End times. You can set a deadline when creating the poll; voting closes automatically when it is reached.
  • Hidden voter names. The creator can hide who voted for what, so members can vote without others seeing their choice.
  • A 15-minute edit window. The poll question can be edited within 15 minutes of creating it.

Older phones and app versions without this update still have none of the three — no edit, no auto-close, fully visible votes — so if your group is making a sensitive decision, confirm the options you see on your own screen before promising anonymity. For a poll without an end time, WhatsApp documents no separate “close poll” button: the working methods are to delete the poll for everyone, or simply post the final result as a follow-up message.

To keep a poll visible while voting runs, pin it: long-press the poll → Pin, and choose 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Up to 3 messages can be pinned in a chat, and the chat gets a system note that a message was pinned.

One more boundary: Channel polls are always confidential — followers see only total counts, and even the channel owner cannot see who participated. And the quiz mode you may have seen advertised — a poll with one marked correct answer and a confetti animation — is Channel Quiz: Channels-only, and still limited to beta testers as of late 2026 reports, with no confirmed general release. There is no verified quiz feature inside group chats; do not plan a class quiz around it yet.

Creating a Group Event

Events began in Community groups in May 2024, reached all group chats in August 2024, and one-to-one chats in April 2025. Anyone in the group can create one — not only admins.

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap + / Attach → Event.
  3. Add the event name, the date and time, and optionally a description (up to 2,048 characters — links from other platforms, like a Zoom or Meet link, can be pasted into it), a location, a WhatsApp call link, and an end time.
  4. Tap Send. The event lands in the chat, and a notification goes to all group members.

For virtual events, the attached call link can be set as a Voice or Video call with a toggle. One Help Center limit worth knowing: a call link cannot be added to an event scheduled more than 12 months in advance (an older guide’s 60-day figure is superseded).

RSVPs, Guest List and Reminders

Members tap Respond on the event and choose Going or Can’t go — with Maybe added later (widely reported in an April 2025 update), making three responses, plus the option to bring a plus one. The responses are visible to the whole group — everyone can see who is attending and who is not — and the event also appears on the group’s info page. Responding alerts the creator, and members who said Going get further updates if the event changes.

Reminders are automatic but vague by design: WhatsApp’s announcement says members who are going “will get an automatic notification when it’s getting close” — no source states the exact timing for group events, so do not promise your group a reminder “one hour before” as an official fact. Pinning the event (next section) is the reliable visibility tool.

Editing, Cancelling and Pinning: Creator Only

The event’s rules are stricter than most people expect, and they are all in the creator’s hands — not the group admins’:

  • Only the member who created the event can edit or cancel it. Another admin cannot step in. Edit path: open the group → tap the group name → Events → select the event → Edit event (name, date/time, location, description) → Send. Cancel: same screen → Cancel event → Yes.
  • When an event is edited, members who responded Going or Maybe are notified, and the group chat also gets a notification of the changes.
  • Only the creator can pin the event: long-press the event → pin → choose 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days — or two extra options events get: “Until event ends” (if it has an end time) or “Until 3 hours after the event starts” (if it does not). Long-press → unpin removes it.

And the built-in restrictions, straight from WhatsApp’s help text: an event has a single host (no co-hosts); you cannot invite people who are not in the group and cannot forward an event to another chat; new members cannot see events created before they joined — even pinned ones — so to include them, delete the old event and create a fresh one; and if the group has disappearing messages on, “you might not be able to create events in advance.” A separate, prettier “Events hub” in Settings — with cover photos and links that even non-WhatsApp guests can open — has been spotted in beta testing in 2026 only; it is not the stable feature described above and does not change today’s group rules.

The poll steps and limits above follow WhatsApp’s help guidance as reproduced by Business Standard in August 2025, and the events rollout and RSVP behaviour follow WhatsApp’s announcement as reported by MacRumors in August 2024.

FAQs

Q: Are WhatsApp poll votes secret?
In a normal group poll, historically no: anyone in the chat can tap “View votes” and see who chose each option, with totals updating live. Two exceptions now exist. Since August 2026, the poll creator can hide voter names and set an end time (members on older app versions may not see these options), and Channel polls are always confidential — followers see only the totals, and not even the channel owner can see who participated.

Q: How do I close or end a poll?
There is no separate Close button in WhatsApp’s documentation. The clean method since August 2026 is to set an end time when creating the poll — voting then locks automatically at the deadline. For a poll already running without an end time, delete the poll for everyone, or post a follow-up message announcing the final result and treat the poll as closed.

Q: Who can edit or cancel a WhatsApp group event?
Only the member who created it — not other group admins, and not the group’s creator unless they also created the event. Edits are made from the group info page’s Events section, and members who responded Going or Maybe are notified of any change. For the same reason, choose your event creator carefully: if that person leaves the group, nobody else can fix a wrong date.

Q: Can I invite people outside the group to an event, or attach a video call?
Outside invites are not allowed for normal group events: an event cannot be forwarded to another chat, and people who join the group later cannot even see events created before they joined. A video call, however, is officially supported — while creating the event you can attach a WhatsApp call link and choose Voice or Video, which is the intended pattern for online events (just note the call link cannot be attached to events more than 12 months ahead).
