WhatsApp Status Privacy: Hide Your Status from Specific People

WhatsApp Status Privacy: Hide Your Status from Specific People

By default, every contact in your phone can see your WhatsApp Status. That includes your boss, your landlord, that one cousin, and the shopkeeper you saved as “Plumber Urdu Bazaar.” The fix takes ten seconds — WhatsApp lets you exclude specific people, or share only with a hand-picked list — but the settings hide two surprises: there is no “Nobody” option, and changing the setting does not hide statuses you already posted.

This guide covers the three real options, both routes to the setting, the rules that catch people out, and what Status privacy does not control.

The Three Options (and the Two That Do Not Exist)

WhatsApp’s Help Center lists exactly three Status privacy options:

OptionWho sees your Status
My contactsAll your contacts (this is the default)
My contacts except…All your contacts except the people you pick
Only share with…Only the people you pick — nobody else

Now the corrections, because low-quality guides keep inventing extra options. There is no “Everyone” option for Status: unlike your profile photo, a Status can never be made public to people who are not your contacts. And there is no “Nobody” switch: to hide your Status from absolutely everyone, choose “Only share with…” and select no one (or a single trusted person). The “Nobody” option you may remember belongs to Last seen, Profile photo and About — a different settings family with a different option list, covered below.

Use “My contacts except…” when you want to shut out a few people. Use “Only share with…” when your Status is really for a small circle — family only, close friends only — which is the setup most people in Pakistan actually want and never find.

How to Change It: Two Routes

Route 1 — Settings (works on both platforms, current layout):

  1. Open Settings (Android: three-dot menu at the top-right; iPhone: the Settings tab at the bottom-right).
  2. Tap Privacy.
  3. Tap Status.
  4. Choose My contacts, My contacts except… or Only share with…, select contacts if asked, and confirm with the green tick.

Route 2 — from the Updates tab: on Android, open the Updates tab, tap the three-dot menu and tap Status privacy. On iPhone, the Updates tab shows a Privacy label at the top-left that opens the same screen.

One version note: older guides send you through Settings → Account → Privacy → Status. Current WhatsApp (2024 onwards) puts Privacy directly under Settings with no Account step — if your phone still shows the Account step, your app or phone is on an older layout, and the destination screen is the same.

Changes Are Not Retroactive: The Rule That Catches Everyone

This is the rule that generates the most confusion, so it deserves its own heading. WhatsApp states it plainly in its help pages: changing your Status privacy settings does not affect any status you have already shared. A status posted an hour ago under “My contacts” stays visible to all your contacts for the rest of its 24 hours, even if you exclude someone a minute later. The new setting applies only to statuses posted after the change.

So if you have just realised a status you posted this morning should never have reached a particular person: change the setting first (so the next status is safe), then delete the live status and re-post it if it must be hidden now. There is no third option — waiting it out means the excluded person can view it until it expires.

Will They Know You Hid Your Status?

WhatsApp sends no notification when you exclude someone or leave them off an “Only share with” list — this rests on consistent secondary reporting rather than a single official sentence, but no guide or report shows any alert being sent. Your statuses simply stop appearing for that person. The honest caveat: someone who used to watch your daily statuses and suddenly sees nothing for weeks may guess. The setting hides content, not suspicion.

The Audience Picker That Quietly Changes Your Default

Since February 2023, every time you compose a Status there has been a floating audience button at the bottom-left of the composer (after you choose the photo, video or text). It opens the same three options for that posting. Convenient — with a trap inside it, in WhatsApp’s own words: “Your most recent audience selection will be saved and used as the default for your next status.”

Read that again. The picker is not a one-off override. Post one private status using “Only share with…” for five people, and that becomes your global default — your next ten statuses also go to those five people until you change it back. Many “my Status views suddenly dropped” mysteries are exactly this. After any one-off private post, reopen the picker or Settings → Privacy → Status and set the default you actually want.

The Mention Exception: Excluded People Can Still See One Status

Since October 2024, WhatsApp has had private Status mentions, and they override your audience setting. If you mention a person in a Status, that person can see the Status even if they are excluded from your selected audience. The same applies to group mentions: mentioning a group makes the Status visible to all its members regardless of your privacy setting (limits on group mentions were reported during testing as up to 5 groups; treat exact figures as beta-era reporting).

Mentions are private in a specific sense: only the mentioned person is notified, the mention is not shown to your other viewers, and the mentioned person can reshare the Status to their own audience while your identity as the original creator stays confidential. Useful for tagging family into a photo — dangerous if you mention someone you had carefully excluded. Check your mentions before posting anything sensitive.

Two smaller features in the same family: Status Likes (the green heart in the viewer list) are private with no counter — only the person who posted the Status can see who liked it, and there is no separate likes-privacy setting to adjust. And ordinary emoji Reactions are something else again — they arrive as a reply message, not a like.

Status Privacy Is Separate From Everything Else

WhatsApp’s Privacy screen is a list of independent switches — Last seen and online, Profile photo, About, and Status each have their own entry and their own audience. Those other three offer Everyone / My Contacts / My Contacts Except… / Nobody; Status offers only its three contacts-based options. Changing one changes nothing about the others:

  • Hiding your Status from someone does not hide your profile photo, About or Last seen from them. Set each one separately.
  • The exception is blocking: a blocked contact sees none of them.
  • Status privacy also does not control Channels, even though they share the Updates tab. Channels run on their own follow model — an admin’s number and photo are hidden from followers, and a channel’s visibility depends on the admin’s discoverability settings, not on anyone’s Status privacy (our channel guide, linked below, covers that system).

Coming Later: Close Friends Lists (Not Confirmed Yet)

You may see videos claiming WhatsApp has an Instagram-style Close Friends list for Status. The accurate status as of October 2026: trackers spotted custom Status lists — named lists with an emoji, including a preset “Close friends” — in Android beta versions in February 2026, described as under development; one outlet later claimed a gradual rollout in May 2026, but Meta has made no official announcement, and most users’ Status privacy screen still shows only the three classic options. A beta audience-picker redesign (chips in the editor) and group-only statuses were likewise spotted in testing only. Check your own Settings → Privacy → Status: if named lists are not there, you do not have them yet — anyone telling you otherwise is describing a beta.

The three options, the not-retroactive rule and the default-saving picker above follow WhatsApp’s February 2023 Status features announcement and its Help Center privacy pages, as reported in October 2026 guides quoting them directly.

FAQs

Q: I changed my Status privacy, but that person can still see the status I posted an hour ago. Why?
Because Status privacy changes are not retroactive. WhatsApp’s help pages state the change does not affect statuses already shared: the status you posted earlier keeps its original audience until it expires after 24 hours. If it must be hidden now, delete that status and re-post it after fixing the setting — the re-post will follow the new audience.

Q: How do I hide my WhatsApp Status from everyone completely?
There is no “Nobody” option for Status — that switch exists only for Last seen, Profile photo and About. For Status, choose “Only share with…” and select no contacts (or one person you fully trust). Your statuses will then reach effectively no one, while the feature stays switched on for the day you want to share with a small circle again.

Q: Does hiding my Status also hide my profile photo and Last seen?
No. Status, Profile photo, About and Last seen are separate entries on the Privacy screen, each with its own setting — and the other three offer an extra “Everyone” and “Nobody” choice that Status does not have. To hide everything from a person you must set each entry (or block them, which hides all of it at once).

Q: I posted one status with “Only share with” and now all my statuses go to the same five people. What happened?
The composer’s audience picker saved your choice. WhatsApp’s own wording is that your most recent audience selection is saved and used as the default for your next status — the picker is not a one-time override. Open Settings → Privacy → Status (or the picker on your next status) and set it back to “My contacts” or whichever default you want going forward.
