WhatsApp Chat Lock: How to Lock and Hide Your Private Chats

WhatsApp Chat Lock: How to Lock and Hide Your Private Chats

Handing your phone to someone — to show a photo, make a payment, or let a child watch a video — should not mean handing them your private conversations too. WhatsApp’s Chat Lock solves exactly that problem: it moves chosen chats into a separate folder that only opens with your fingerprint, face or phone passcode. This guide covers how to lock a chat, how to make the locked folder disappear entirely with a secret code, and — just as important — what Chat Lock does not protect.

What Chat Lock Actually Does

When you lock a chat, it leaves your main chat list and moves into a folder called Locked Chats. Opening that folder requires your device authentication — fingerprint, Face ID or your phone’s passcode. The feature works on one-to-one chats, group chats and even muted chats, and it costs nothing.

Notifications change too. When a message arrives in a locked chat, WhatsApp does not show the message text or the sender’s name. The notification simply reads “WhatsApp: 1 new message” — so a phone lying face-up on a table reveals nothing.

Chat Lock is not a new experiment: WhatsApp announced it back in May 2023, so it is a settled feature on current versions of the app. If you cannot find it on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store first — an old version is the usual reason it is missing.

How to Lock a Chat (Two Ways)

Each chat is locked individually — there is no “lock everything” button. You have two routes:

Route 1 — from inside the chat:
1. Open the chat you want to lock.
2. Tap the contact or group name at the top.
3. Tap Chat Lock.
4. Turn on “Lock this chat…” and confirm with your fingerprint, face or passcode.

Route 2 — from the chat list (Android shortcut):
1. Long-press the chat in your chat list.
2. Tap the three-dot menu.
3. Tap Lock Chat and confirm.

If your phone has no fingerprint, face unlock or passcode set up, WhatsApp will ask you to set up device authentication first — Chat Lock borrows your phone’s existing lock rather than creating its own password.

On iPhone, the route is the same idea — open the chat, tap the name, then Chat Lock — and unlocking uses Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode. There is no option on iPhone to set a different passcode just for locked chats; what protects them is exactly what protects the phone itself.

“I Can’t See the Chat Lock Option” — Quick Troubleshooting

If Chat Lock is missing from a chat’s info screen, work through these three causes before assuming your phone is unsupported:

  • WhatsApp is out of date. Chat Lock arrived in 2023, so any reasonably current version has it — but phones that have not updated apps in a long time may not. Update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store and look again.
  • No device lock is set. Chat Lock leans on your phone’s fingerprint, face or passcode. If none is set up, WhatsApp will prompt you to create one first — after that, the Chat Lock option works.
  • You are looking in the wrong place. Chat Lock lives inside the individual chat’s info screen (tap the name at the top of an open chat) — not in WhatsApp’s main Settings, where you will only find the separate whole-app fingerprint lock.

How to Find and Open Your Locked Chats

  1. Go to the Chats tab.
  2. Pull down / scroll to the very top of the chat list.
  3. Tap Locked Chats.
  4. Authenticate with fingerprint, face or passcode.

To remove a lock, open the Locked Chats folder, open the chat, tap the name at the top, open Chat Lock and switch it off (you will authenticate again). The chat returns to your main list as if nothing happened.

The Secret Code: Make Locked Chats Disappear Completely

A folder called “Locked Chats” still tells anyone holding your phone that you have something hidden. The Secret Code feature goes one step further — it can hide the folder itself.

Set a secret code:
1. Open the Locked Chats folder.
2. Open Chat lock settings (via the settings / three-dot menu inside the folder).
3. Tap Secret code, enter a code, tap Next, enter it again to confirm, then Done.

The code can be a word, a phrase, numbers, symbols — even an emoji — and it is deliberately different from your phone’s passcode. Pick something memorable: WhatsApp presents the code as something “you should be able to remember”, and no recovery procedure is documented anywhere if you forget it.

Hide the folder:
1. In the same Chat lock settings, turn on Hide Locked Chats.
2. The Locked Chats folder now vanishes from your chat list entirely.
3. To get back in, type your exact secret code into the Search bar at the top of the Chats tab. The folder appears only if the code matches — then authenticate as usual.

When you close WhatsApp or return to the chat list, the folder hides itself again automatically. To anyone scrolling your phone, there is no folder, no hint, nothing to tap on.

What Chat Lock Does NOT Do

Chat Lock is strong at one job — keeping chats private from someone holding your phone. It is not a general privacy shield, and these limits matter:

  • Calls still ring. Voice and video calls from a locked contact ring and appear normally. Chat Lock protects the message thread, not calls.
  • Screenshots are not blocked. Once a locked chat is opened after authentication, screenshots and screen recording work as normal. Chat Lock cannot stop anyone — including you — capturing what is on screen.
  • It has no separate PIN of its own. Unlocking uses your device passcode or biometrics. The Secret Code only finds and unhides the folder; it is not a replacement unlock password.
  • The other person is not told. Locking is entirely on your device — your contact sees nothing different. (This is a difference from Advanced Chat Privacy, below.)

Chat Lock vs App Lock vs Archive: Which Do You Need?

FeatureWhat it protectsWho it stopsBest for
Chat LockIndividual chatsSomeone holding your unlocked phonePrivate conversations on a shared phone
App lock (fingerprint lock)The whole WhatsApp appAnyone opening WhatsApp at allSimple, all-or-nothing privacy
ArchiveNothing — it only decluttersNobody; chats reappear on new messages unless kept archivedTidying the list, not privacy

The strongest everyday setup for most people is the combination: app lock for the whole app, Chat Lock for the few chats that matter most, and a secret code with Hide Locked Chats if the phone is regularly in other hands. Chat Lock also works on budget Android phones, not just flagships — handy in Pakistan, where a phone is often shared within the family.

What About Photos and Videos Inside Locked Chats?

A common expectation is that locking a chat also hides its photos and videos from the phone’s gallery. Be careful here: Chat Lock on its own is about the chat list and notifications — it is not the setting that controls gallery saving. Sources differ on how locked-chat media behaves with auto-download, so do not rely on Chat Lock for this. The setting that stops a chat’s media from auto-saving to the gallery is Advanced Chat Privacy (covered below) — turn it on for that specific chat if gallery privacy is what you actually need. Use both together and the two jobs are properly covered.

A Related Setting: Advanced Chat Privacy

Do not confuse Chat Lock with Advanced Chat Privacy, a separate per-chat setting (open the chat → tap the name → Advanced Chat Privacy). Where Chat Lock guards against someone holding your phone, Advanced Chat Privacy guards against people inside the chat: it stops other participants from exporting the chat, auto-saving its media to their gallery, or using its messages with Meta AI. One visible difference: changing Advanced Chat Privacy posts a system message inside the chat, so the other participants can see it was changed — Chat Lock never does that.

Looking ahead, WhatsApp is also testing a stricter option called Restricted Chat in Android beta (spotted September 2026), which would stop a chosen chat syncing to linked devices like WhatsApp Web at all. That is beta testing only for now — not a feature you can switch on today.

FAQs

Q: I hid my Locked Chats folder and now I can’t find it. How do I get it back?
Type your exact secret code into the Search bar at the top of the Chats tab. If the code matches, the Locked Chats folder appears; authenticate with fingerprint, face or passcode to open it. It hides itself again when you leave. If you have forgotten the secret code, be aware that WhatsApp does not publish a recovery method for it — which is why the code should be something memorable from the day you set it.

Q: Will the other person know that I locked our chat?
No. Chat Lock is entirely on your device: nothing changes on their phone, and no message or notice is sent. This is different from Advanced Chat Privacy, which does post a visible system message in the chat when changed.

Q: Can I use a different PIN just for locked chats?
No. Locked chats open with your device’s passcode or biometrics — WhatsApp does not offer a separate unlock PIN for them. The Secret Code serves a different purpose: it reveals the hidden Locked Chats folder when typed into Search. If you want a stronger barrier, strengthen your phone’s own lock.

Q: Chat Lock, app lock or archive — which one should I use?
Use Chat Lock for individual private chats, especially on a phone other people sometimes hold. Use app lock if you want the whole of WhatsApp behind your fingerprint. Use archive only for tidiness — it is not a privacy feature, and archived chats hold no lock at all.
